Codec Support
You may use a wide array of codec types with the Revo 3610, especially if a lot of your content is in HD format. So, be sure to load them onto the Revo so you can enhance your viewing pleasure. A good one is through Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP). I’ve used this over the years and supports a wide range of codecs. I played QuickTime, MKV, MPEG2-TS, WMV HD, H.264 and they all played very well.
Currently, I do not intend to use Windows Media Player as Boxee or XBMC will be my media center of choice. But WMC does work quite well on the Revo 3610. Performance is peppy and clean.
Conclusions
I experienced excellent playback of Internet and Lan content due to my cable connection with 7.5 mb down and a wired 100 mb home network connected to a Windows Home Server. So, overall, I’ve had very impressive performance with the Revo 3610.
The Revo is connected to a 40′” HDTV via HDMI at 1080P. By mid-December I plan to turn off the cable TV subscription and rely solely on an HDTV antenna and Internet content for our TV viewing pleasures. I may even look into a Hauppauge USB PVR to test out some over the air HDTV recording and make up for any shortcomings we may find on Hulu, Fancast or Clicker.
I would suggest removing all the bloatware from the Revo i.e. Windows Office 7 trial, Nero 9 and all the other useless items as it will free up some much needed ram. Be careful not to remove the Acer Hot Key program, as it runs the media keys on the wireless keyboard.
Though I did leave the Acer Updater and Backup programs installed…just in case.
Overall, I’m very, very impressed with this little Revo 3610. It has performed better than expected! For it’s small size, silence, and low cost of $330 USD- you can’t go wrong to make the Revo 3610 your HTPC of choice!

John,
The revo supports only 5.1, so I don’t understand how one can get 7.1 from the system then?
I received my 3610 from B&H Photo (sorry I said BH before). It did include the VESUS mount, but so far I haven’t looked into using it as I am having trouble getting a wireless router signal. I had to go to Paul’s unboxed page to find out what the tiny black plug was, still not sure it’s purpose but pulled off the tape and plugged it in.
I am using the Belkin N wireless router but have only limited access indicated and can’t get on line. I think my massive stone fireplace wall may be blocking the signal.
Ed Taylor,
The tiny black plug is for the SPIDF optical out to cover and protect the LED inside. I don’t know why they cover it with white tape at the factory.
The wifi? I think you have to go into the control panel and set up networking to turn it on first. It’s not on by default.
It is a notebook style card, so signal strength is not that good and it tends to hog CPU and RAM. So, I’d go wired if you can. Or buy a bridge and plug the revo into it with a eithernet cable and let the bridge do the gruntwork of wifi and not the Revo.
I purchased the revo aspire 3610 with 4 gig’s of DDR and 500 gig a bites of storage space. I’m using my Panasonic 54V10 as my monitor.
I am happy with it and don’t know how I got along without it. It’s at the leading edge of current technology. Ten years ago this would have cost an absolute fortune,
if even possible?? I give it 5 stars out of 5.

A friend (HP Professional) dropped by with a Belkin N Wireless USB Adapter. His take being that the internal antenna is not that good and that Belkin to Belkin is a safer bet for communications. His fix with some other installation tune-ups has me running. I am going to move the adapter via an extension cable to gain more signal strength.
I am going to have to schedule time to do anything else to it as my wife is on-line with NetFlix as I write this. We are all impressed with the quietness of the 3610 and the bang for the bucks. I’m thinking the VESA mount might be OK for a monitor but on a 40 inch or larger HDTV it would be inconvenient for making connections or reaching the power button. I may try laying mine flat on spacers to save space, it now sits where I had my 500GB DVR drive.
The bottom line for my as a noobie is that it does what I need done and I don’t need to push the envelope on HD performance. Thanks for the forum it has helped me enter the world of HTPC though most wouldn’t call my set-up home theater.
Ed Taylor,
Great to hear the USB adapter is working to give a better signal. The built in unit is very weak. I would have tried to get a wireless adapter that was Ethernet cable connect so as not to lag the revo further, but if it is working…that is all that matters.
The vesa mount is not something I use myself. I have mine using the included V-shaped foot stand and have it standing vertically next to my HDTV. I leave mine running 24/7 (but it sleeps after 1 hr of inactivity) so I never turn it off.
Glad you were able to get this all rolling and works good for you and your family. Chime in with any updates or questions.
