Many of you have been waiting for a full tilt review of an Acer Aspire Revo 3610 Atom ION 330. Well, here it is. Possibly the first one on the Internet with this level of detail. It’s taken a week of use to get the full impression of it’s power and abilities and this review should leave no doubt! So, here goes.
Some of you may already know that I’ve been on a quest for the ultimate “cut the cable” solution and save $70 + a month on crappy cable service with bloatware content. Well, it’s been a year now and I’ve looked at a lot of software, desktops, NAS items and network media players. I’ve run different programs on Windows and Xboxes too, like XBMC and Boxee. Both of which I love! But none of those items were yet able to give my family a complete media experience. So, what is that experience? None of those devices or media center programs offers BOTH network share (music, video, pictures) and complete Internet content. Though Boxee comes closest, and their new improved Boxee Beta arrives December 7,2009, but it still falls very short of fulfilling my needs with regard to Internet content. That will change over time as media companies embrace Boxee and alliances are forged with media and hardware developers, but that’s a whole other post.
Also, with so many media formats like; Adobe Flash 10.1 Beta, HD, h.264 .mkv, AVI, MOV, mpg4 and Blue Ray, there is nothing yet available with the ability and power to play such a wide diversity of content. Plus, Boxee & XBMC do not provide an browser to view Internet content as well as surf the Internet from your couch. Ultimately, I kept returning to a HTPC with Windows as the only solution. And that’s where the Acer Revo 3610 with Windows-7 64bit comes in! Oh, I can hear the Linux and Mac people just wincing and building up steam. You guys can get the same thing too, so if that’s your flavor go for it. But this is a Windows thing happening here. So, lets get down to business.
What’s Inside?

The Atom Dual Core 330 1.66 GHz processor does not consume a lot of power at all yet has enough oomph to push up to 1080p Blue Ray HD content with ease courtesy of its close integration ION GPU that supports graphics acceleration and offloading. The Intel Atom & ION is a single mobo unit that incorporates the use of NVIDIA’s GeForce 9400M chipset. All this provides a low power consuming, high end video device in a tiny package! The unit is, dare I say it, silent! Even while viewing 1080P content, when the fan is throttled up I have to put my ear up to it in order to hear a whisper of sound. Unlike competitors such as the AsRock 330, which is somewhat audible at 26+dB. Also, the unit is cold to the touch at idle and barely gets warm to the touch when under heavy use.

John,
The revo supports only 5.1, so I don’t understand how one can get 7.1 from the system then?
I received my 3610 from B&H Photo (sorry I said BH before). It did include the VESUS mount, but so far I haven’t looked into using it as I am having trouble getting a wireless router signal. I had to go to Paul’s unboxed page to find out what the tiny black plug was, still not sure it’s purpose but pulled off the tape and plugged it in.
I am using the Belkin N wireless router but have only limited access indicated and can’t get on line. I think my massive stone fireplace wall may be blocking the signal.
Ed Taylor,
The tiny black plug is for the SPIDF optical out to cover and protect the LED inside. I don’t know why they cover it with white tape at the factory.
The wifi? I think you have to go into the control panel and set up networking to turn it on first. It’s not on by default.
It is a notebook style card, so signal strength is not that good and it tends to hog CPU and RAM. So, I’d go wired if you can. Or buy a bridge and plug the revo into it with a eithernet cable and let the bridge do the gruntwork of wifi and not the Revo.
I purchased the revo aspire 3610 with 4 gig’s of DDR and 500 gig a bites of storage space. I’m using my Panasonic 54V10 as my monitor.
I am happy with it and don’t know how I got along without it. It’s at the leading edge of current technology. Ten years ago this would have cost an absolute fortune,
if even possible?? I give it 5 stars out of 5.
Michael Norris
A friend (HP Professional) dropped by with a Belkin N Wireless USB Adapter. His take being that the internal antenna is not that good and that Belkin to Belkin is a safer bet for communications. His fix with some other installation tune-ups has me running. I am going to move the adapter via an extension cable to gain more signal strength.
I am going to have to schedule time to do anything else to it as my wife is on-line with NetFlix as I write this. We are all impressed with the quietness of the 3610 and the bang for the bucks. I’m thinking the VESA mount might be OK for a monitor but on a 40 inch or larger HDTV it would be inconvenient for making connections or reaching the power button. I may try laying mine flat on spacers to save space, it now sits where I had my 500GB DVR drive.
The bottom line for my as a noobie is that it does what I need done and I don’t need to push the envelope on HD performance. Thanks for the forum it has helped me enter the world of HTPC though most wouldn’t call my set-up home theater.
Ed Taylor,
Great to hear the USB adapter is working to give a better signal. The built in unit is very weak. I would have tried to get a wireless adapter that was Ethernet cable connect so as not to lag the revo further, but if it is working…that is all that matters.
The vesa mount is not something I use myself. I have mine using the included V-shaped foot stand and have it standing vertically next to my HDTV. I leave mine running 24/7 (but it sleeps after 1 hr of inactivity) so I never turn it off.
Glad you were able to get this all rolling and works good for you and your family. Chime in with any updates or questions.
I just want to report on an eSata external drive that works like a dream with the Revo 3610: the iomega Professional 1TB USB 2.0 / eSATA External Hard Drive 3428. It very fast — downloaded 23GB of pictures in about 8 minutes — and very quiet (no fan). So far it works very nicely recording TV shows in Windows Media Center — waking up from sleep with the Revo, recording, go back to sleep, etc. I using the very inexpensive KWORLD ATSC TV Stick UB435-Q ($30 at Newegg) and the combination makes a great 1TB DVR for the Revo.
Den Hodgson,
Nice to hear about your set up and how well it works. Same for the Kworld unit. I’ve read that others claim they use very little CPU and record while watching HULU on boxee or a browser too without a hitch! Nice to see some more info on that.
Greetings Paul,
After doing a lot of research, I purchased a Revo 3610. I have had it for a week and am very pleased with the performance to cost ratio. I wanted to thank you for your help. Your ‘My Revo’ post saved me a lot of time and effort. Some of the drivers you mentioned were understandably outdated, but you still led me in the right direction (I think you posted updates for most of the drivers as well). Thank you.
I am using mine as a dedicated HTPC, mostly Boxee, Hulu and some browsing. I am using a Logitech Dinovo Mini keyboard, which I suggest you look into if you are in the market to replace a larger setup.
With my new toy, and a little VPN magic, I no longer have to suffer through the sparse English programing in Germany, where I live.
Also, I write for a newspaper and cover a lot of tech/science and entertainment media. I am speaking with my editor about doing a piece on HTPCs. If they bite on the idea, I’ll send you a link.
Thanks again,
Warren
Warren,
Thanks for the props on my blog and glad it helped you get a jump start on your Revo experience!
The drivers being outdated? Well, I’ve found that the Flash 1p performs best over 2p or 3p. Now the Nvidia driver, yeah that’s outdated since the original post. I’ll check to see if they need a clean up.
I’ll look into the Logitech Dinovo. Not sure if I want another keyboard as I like the included unit. Though, I really want a remote.
When you get the article published, definitely shoot me a link. I’d like to see it. If you need any Boxee help, come see me and the other Super Mods on the forums for guidance.
Paul,
Thanks for offering the help. I may take you up on that offer since I am having issues with apps like CNN playing in the top left corner of the screen.
As for the outdated drivers, it wasn’t a big deal. I think it was just the Nvidia one, which you mentioned latter in the article, and the Java update 17, which is now 18. (I think)
The Dinovo is about the size of a remote, but not by much. It also has the media center type buttons and a little mouse pad that switches to a D-pad. I was thinking about waiting on the Boxee remote release, but wanted a mouse pad for browsing the web. Sometimes a D-pad just won’t cut it. The included keyboard is nice, but using it with the mouse while sitting in the recliner is a little bit of a hassle.
I’ll keep you posted on the progress with the article.
P.S.
If you want to see my articles, you can just search my name in quotes under Google news. (Shameless plugs never hurt anyone)
Warren,
The CNN app is giving a few users issues I’ve heard over the past few months. Not sure, but I’d have to look at what’s become of it as I’ve not followed that one too closely on the forums.
Drivers? Yeah, I try to come back and touch on them if I find that one is better…sometimes they’re not. Java, I don’t bother with as I use nothing on the Revo that uses it myself.
I think I turned off the Java update checker in MSCONFIG.
I’ll check out the Dinovo. Sounds interesting. Do report back with anything you discover.
Please keep posted on the article and I’ll check your Google reference too. Thanks again.

No one I know of is using Media Portal. I did a quick look at the site, but did not really find enough details about it or see it in action playing video. Looks like it’s more a DVR with music and picture access????

Paul,
your review and the collection of drivers you provided helped a lot during setup of my Revo. Many thanks to you and to everybody here who contributed their knowledge and experience.
I have one annoying problem I’ve been unable to solve: I want to use “Wake on LAN” to power the PC on remotely. I’m familiar with the WoL concept and so far I’ve been able to wake it up from sleep/hibernation mode but not when it’s powered down. The problem is, when I power it down, the ethernet adapter also gets turned off (the card’s control light goes out). Do you or anybody here know how to setup the machine to change that behavior (PC power down, but NIC still on)? I checked BIOS settings and adapter properties but couldn’t find a solution.
Any help/ideas are most welcome.
Thanks again.
Peter
Hey Peter,
I normally never power mine down all the way, I use the sleep/hibernate as it uses only 1 watt of power. I do wake mine remotely from this mode, but have never tried via a total power down state.
I know a guy on the Boxee forums that was trying to tackle this subject. I’ll see if I can’t get an answer from him over the weekend.
Until then, hit my new forum and post there too. Maybe someone will see there and help out too. http://forum.pauljroberts.com
Thanks for the props on the blog! Glad it helped.
What about gaming? i really want the revo 3610, and ive heard that its great for gaming too!
but will it be able to run high performing games like, GTA 4, The sims 3, Need for speed carbon etc… ????
Any thoughts on the latest Flash 10.1 release?
Warren,
I’ve not gotten to install Flash RC and test yet. Had some Boxee Beta issues to trouble shoot for the team. Maybe some time early this week. I went back to 1p after testing 3p. The 3p had lower cpu with IE, FFox and Hulu desktop, but not boxee. Since 1p was better on an average, I went back to it. Hopefully, RC is an improvement overall. I did have a few fellow revo users on Boxee forums say it works well though.;-)
I do have the latest Nvidia driver and it caused no ill, but improved nothing. Those Nvidia updates are mostly for games anyway.
Paul,
I’ve been running the 3p and don’t see much of a difference with the RC yet. As you pointed out, I get a little better CPU performance with 3p as I haven’t been using Boxee for most of my viewing. I would love to use Boxee but I seem to get better streaming using Hulu and other sites on FFox. Hulu desktop and Boxee just don’t buffer as fast as when I use FFox. I think it might have something to do with the fact I am using a VPN tunnel. I have a 16mbs internet connection and speedtest.net shows a download speed of around 4-5mbs when I test on a server in Rochester, NY. My VPN server is in NYC and I am located in Germany. Not sure why this would make a difference though. I assume the content is still streaming from the same servers… Maybe the upcoming Boxee release will fix this issue – at least I am hoping it will.
I also haven’t seen any difference with the new Nvidia driver.
I’ve install the latest drivers for ion(graphics, chipset, audio),downloaded the mpc-hc,downloaded the codecs cccp but when i try to play a 1080p movie there is no sound.something to suggest?
Well, without more details….I’d venture to guess it’s the file. If multiple files do the same thing, then I’d have to start looking at the container, then the codec etc. Then test other file types and see what happens. Does the machine have zero sound? Or only videos? Or only certain types of videos? Or only certain file types……. The list goes on and on……
only with 1080p movies there is no sound…
OK, so what’s the file container type? MKV, AVI, MOV, TS, BLue Ray, DVD? If it’s ripped content, what codec is it using? You have to look at how odd that is that only a 1080p file has no sound. As in my last reply brings up soooooo many more questions due to the large amount of variables that affect how a file plays on any computer.
Detains, man, details.
Any ideas how to get full 1080p on Sony Bravia KLV 40ZX1M?
I got my Revo yesterday and hooked it up to a Sony Bravia KLV 40ZX1M (which you can pick up new for around $1000 if you look around):
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/sto … 1665537438
The Sony Bravia works great with a Sony PS3 and goes into 1080p mode without problems and the picture is sharp and crisp. The Sony Bravia also tells me this when I push the ‘info’ button on the remote; it says ‘HDMI 1080p Full’.
With the Revo the Sony Bravia initially shows ‘HDMI 1080p Full’ as the Revo is booting and the ‘Starting Windows’ message is shown next to the rippling Windows logo. However, as soon as the Windows login screen is displayed then the Bravia shows ‘HDMI Normal’ (no ’1080p’ and ‘Full’ changes to ‘Normal’) and the picture looks high resolution, fills the whole TV display, but pixels don’t look sharp and crisp
The Revo has taken all MS updates and is running the latest nvidia ion drivers (where the resize advanced option isn’t there anymore). The Revo recognizes the Sony Bravia as a ‘Sony TV XV’. This isn’t obviously correct but may be correct. Could this be the problem?
The nvidia control panel tells me that 1080p resolution is selected. It’s just that the pixels don’t look sharp and crisp and the Sony Bravia itself doesn’t report ‘HDMI 1080p Full’… instead just ‘HDMI Normal’.
I looked in the manual of the Sony Bravia in case this is an issue with the Sony:
http://www.docs.sony.com/relea....._ES_FR.pdf
It talks about something called ‘CEA 861′ which is difficult to find info about when Googling (which mainly reports about ‘CEA 861 B’… this Sony Bravia is a pretty old model… could this be the problem?
Page 11 of the manual also says: “The 1080p timing when applied to the HDMI input will be treated as a video timing and not a PC timing.” Who understands what the difference is between a video timing and a PC timing? Could this be the problem?
Please help all you 1080p gurus out there!
YOu can change the TV’s settings itself. My New RCA has full, normal, cinema, and one other. I set it to normal as that is the natural size. Full will blow up what signal it is getting and is not really normal sizing fro 16:9
I’ve seen many older TV’s not “interpret” the signal correctly from PC’s, DVD players etc. It’s like there is a language barrier and it messes up the signal and spits out a crappy picture. It’s most likely not the REvo, as I”ve seen this before.
Leave the Revo at 1080P or 720P and then tinker with the outputs of the TV to see what gives the best picture. Outside of that, get a newer TV…..but I”ve seen it happen with newer TV’s too but less often.
Hi
Great review. I have been waiting to upgrade my good old 1.0 Xbox that served its purpose as a media player with xbmc for over 12 years. Could you tell me if you did a dual boot with both xbmc and win 7? How do you control this revo using standard IR remote? Please advice.
Thanks
V
I do not use XBMC on the REvo. I did have XBMC installed on my first gen Xboxes with the soft mod, but those are no longer used. Boxee does more for me than XBMC can.
You can install XBMC on windows 7 or do the ubuntu install where it runs on a USB stick. Sorta hoky though.
Just install it on windows 7 as a program and roll.
Remote? I don’t use one myself. But you can run any basic $20 Windows MCE remote. Many control Boxee or XBMC. See forums at forums.boxee.tv and XBMC. We have all sorts of guides for that on the forum.boxees.tv site.
Hi,
I’am just about to buy this little box, any idea how it would react to some photo / videos editing? just basic stuff on photoshop or small montage on Windows Media Maker.
thanks a lot
Amine
Amine,
Ah, it should be ok. It won’t burn the house down to encode a video, but it will work ok for that. Just don’t expect quad core speed out of it. Photo editing with photoshop should be ok too, but may load a little slow at first start. Sure, it will work.
How does the 3610 perform with a usb TV tuner and Windows Media Center? I just had a bad experience trying to use a Dell ZinoHD as a DVR replacement. Pulling up the program guide or trying to change channels in Media Center was excruciatingly slow when live TV was playing. I am hoping that the AspireRevo 3610 would work better with the dual core processor and Nvidia ION graphics.
Johnnyv,
there are several comments here in this thread plus a blog post I wrote on the Kworld TV tuner as well as in my Acer Forum. The turners each put more or less demands on the revo by brand. We seem to have had best luck with the Kworld brand.
http://www.pauljroberts.com/forum/index.php
Hello there Paul Robert and others…
i bought my revo 3610 two weeks ago and i’m trying to set it up it as ip-cctv system server that can run 24/7… i’m using dlink’s cam software with 1TB WD external hdd…
here’s the basic specs out of the box…
4GB RAM
320GB HDD
Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit (sadly…)
the rest are the same as yours…
the problem that i’m facing now, it seems the system will run properly only for at least around 2 days or 48 hrs++…
then it’s either hang or it reset or reboot for start-up repair disk… and it had been constantly do that for a week or so,every 2 days… lol…
anyway… i doubt it’s due overheating coz definately it will crash or hang earlier than every 2 days…
but my suspects for now are the memory’s modules, any of the hardware’s settings, BIOS’s settings and perhaps the readyboost function… btw, is it necessary to use readyboost in Win 7?
what i’m doing at the moment is to isolate one by one until i find out the culprit but i wish to know IF anyone else face same problem as mine with R3610…
thanks for creating this site and i hope others can help me to solve my problem soon… cheers for now…
just some extra information…
i’ve tested the ip-cctv system with an old acer notebook with lower specs than the revo and with win xp-pro for 5 months and it didn’t give me same problem as i’m facing with revo…
i just wish i can do the troubleshooting process faster that i don’t need to rely the notebook as backup…
NJ,
I really don’t know. I could only guess that it’s the Hard Drive, the memory is failing, or overheating. Or the program is some reason eating up all the ram (some video or audio programs will do that) and then it writes to the disk constantly. It may be caching all the data on the revo drive before it sends to the WD 1TB USB drive. But because it’s doing a disc repair on the main Revo drive, I feel that the main the drive is possibly just bad and needs replaced. Bad sectors that are unable to be written to with data will cause the machine to hang and then reboot to repair the disc.
You really need to go into the windows error logs and read through them to narrow what time of day it’s doing this and what the exact error(s) are causing the reboot. That may give you the info you need….
If you lean towards a bad main drive, better make those backup discs for the factory OS before you replace the hard drive.
Ready Boost? Never touched it myself and I don’t have it turned on. Not sure what troubles, if any, could be caused by its use.
Anyone else.
well, i hope the hdd isn’t the main culprit… i did do scandisk few times for all my new computers and the revo did get the same treatment… didn’t see any bad sectors or problems on the hdd part itself…
as for the RAM, i did suspect it as if it’s full every 48 hrs and somehow it can’t flush the old data but it’s just a suspect… i did test for error with Win 7 mem diagnostic and it didn’t show any prob…
however, with Win 7, i don’t know where to check the log error coz with previous windows, after a serious system rest, it will show up the next boot up… somehow i didn’t see any in Win 7… so until now i can’t see any error log so far after the system hang or reset…
as for the startup repair situation, it only happened once so far… the rest it just hang or restart every 48 hrs++… it really stumped me.. lol…
for now, i disabled the readyboost and wait for the next 48 hrs to see IF it’s going to hang or reset again…
as for the rest of your suggestions, i’ll take it into consideration to troubleshoot afterwards… thanks again and i hope there will be other inputs to help me… cheers…
latest update…
it’s not related to readyboost… my revo (without any readyboost) restarted by itself 48++ hrs since my last post…
it’s getting constant now… every 48++ hrs it will restart… somehow my unit can’t be used 24/7…
so now i have to wait another 48++ hrs to find another solution… sigh…
other than that, i might to restart the system manually every 24 hrs… lol…
NJ,
I still thing you’ve got a ram over run buffer issue or a hard drive issue. Look at the error logs for hints to the reason for the reboot……
hmmm… i have a spare 2GB RAM module frm another netbook… where can i find a step-by-step instruction on how to open or upgrade the revo?
btw… does DDR2 or DDR3 do any difference to revo? incase i’ll need to replace the modules… IF it’s just the RAM, i’m “lazy” to send it back… i’ll consider it the “unlucky” factor on my side to get a bad RAM… lol…
thanks in advance…
NJ,
Here’s a guy I chat with on occasion and has great info and video on how to take apart a Revo.
http://www.netbooked.net
http://netbooked.net/blog/acer.....ual-found/
thanks… now let’s wait for another 36 hrs for another result… and then i’ll try the RAM…
NJ,
Why wait 36 hrs? Did you do something that you’re testing?
My Revo Forums:
http://www.pauljroberts.com/forum/
yes… i’ve started to test on software’s compatibility b4 read your post… i hope the RAM would be the last option coz i feel it’s a hassle to open up and check the slots or modules one by one…
i should just let it ON without running any software and see IF it’s still restart without any program running at early stage… but i’m too excited to think it first… lol…
well, IF i’ve solved the problem after this, at least you can share it with others in the future… the main culprit still is the RAM but i feel a bit adventurous for now… hehehe…
nice forum… should i transfer my “case” there instead of here?
i noticed during my revo boot up…
it’s stated…
CPU : Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU 330 @ 1.60GHz
Speed : 1.60GHz
Stepping: 02 CPUID:000106C2
Cache L1 Size: 24 KB
Cache L2 Size: 512 KB
EM64T CPU
i thought the L2 cache supposely 1 MB? something wrong with the processor?
guess what… i feel hopeless already… lol…
what i’m going to do next is just to restart the system manually every 24 hrs… at least i can control it…
until i can find the right solution, i wish to convey my thanks to Paul Robert for creating a place for revo users to share their experience…
i believe revo is a great idea but sadly, i’m the unlucky one… lol…
hopefully when ION2 is coming out, i’ll try again my luck next time…
for now… cheers to all…
HI THERE
I bought my revo couple day Everything work but I can not use
wireless keyboard and mouse How to I can use it I tried to press connect button on keyboard and switch on under mouse but revo did not found it
Ed,
The mouse and Keyboard USB dongle is inside the mouse in the battery compartment. It is a small white square item. Pull it out of the mouse and plug it into one of the USB plugs on the revo. Your mouse & Keyboard will not work until you do this.
Ugh .. updated the flash stuff to RC7 this weekend, and everything got worse (at least, stuff from Hulu did) .. is there something that needs to go with these updates? I rolled back for now.
Kaz,
did you install the nvidia update too? either the newest wHQL or the Beta 257.15 will do.
Also, got worse how? Browser or Boxee?
