Pre-order a Boxee Box and Intel is Inside

Pre-orders for a Boxee Box with the new Intel CE4100 chip is now available via

The Internet is ablaze with the buzz of the latest Boxee blog post regarding the long awaited retail release of the Boxee Box. The big change was the hardware move from the Nvidia Tegra 2 to the Intel CE4100 Atom Chip.  Why? Well, Per Avner Ronen of Boxee:

Boxee Box is now based on the Intel Atom Processor (the Intel CE4100 system-on-a-chip codenamed “Sodaville”).  This switch means that Boxee will be part of the Smart TV program that Intel is pushing and that will be heavily promoted this fall.

At CES we demoed a Boxee Box running on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 platform. We decided to make the switch to Intel earlier this year (which was a part of what delayed us from our earlier ‘Q2 launch date) to provide better support for high-profile h264, HD playback. The Boxee Box with Intel Inside supports full HD. 1080p, High Profile 4.1. And while the spec calls for 62.5Mbit/s, we have actually tested it in excess of 90Mbit/s (sorry, that’s the highest bitrate sample we could get our hands on). No sweat.”

Since the first official Boxee statements regarding the 4th qt release of the Boxee Box, the original MSRP of $199.99 has gone up to $229.99, but Pre-order prices at Amazon have it at the original $199.99. Which is a nice discount for pre-ordering.

Of course the Boxee Box will have the standard fair of options we’ve all come to expect:

  • Play what you normally watch on your computer  (whether it is on the Internet or your home network) on their TV
  • Tailor the Internet experience to a huge flat screen
  • Do it in full HD, 1080p with 5.1 surround whenever possible
  • Share the stuff you watch with your friends and see what they are watching
  • Use a simple remote rather than a keyboard and mouse

Per the other posts from around the net, Boxee Box will still offer accelerated Flash 10.1 and has added a new browser based on Webkit and HTML5 support. You can get an interactive look see at the D-link web site.

So, the Boxee Box is close to fruition. It’s been a long wait, but the end is in sight. I can’t wait to get my mitts on a new Boxee Box.You can be sure I’ll have full review on it’s features, functions and performance of Flash, Silverlight and H264 HD files. So, stay tuned……
