Boxee Media Center and Internet TV – The Next Generation

Boxee media center and Internet based TV are the next generation of entertainment that will rapidly change the way we watch TV!   So what the heck is Boxee?  First, Boxee is a media center that plays content on your computer or from other devices on your home network. It also allows you to connect to Internet based content such as; TV, music, video, pictures and much more.  On you PC or laptop, think of it as a home page of sorts that brings all of your favorite media in one place. You can even install Boxee on a dedicated PC connected directly to your TV and supplement or replace your current cable TV subscriber! Plus, you can install it on Mac and Linux (Windows is currently in Alpha testing).

 Why Im blogging?

I thought I’d kick things off by addressing a question that most of my associates are asking me: Why I’m blogging?

Well, the reason(s) are many and somewhat complex. Though my work is mostly fulfilling, there are not a lot of opportunities for meaningful conversation, growth, learning or teaching within that environment. I know that sounds negative, but it’s a dose of reality within my environment and many others in our society.  So, I don’t feel it is negative.  Some of us  have little time to “get out” due to work schedules or family obligations.  Basically,  with all these barriers, we don’t have a large pool of people in our lives to bounce ideas and thoughts off of.  To learn different points of view. To learn new and better ways to do and think about things. To succeed!

twitter logo s Twitter Tools for WordPress

Twitter Tools for WordPress is a cool little plug in that allows you to plug your tweets into your blog and/or your blog posts into a tweet. Sound cool? Well, it is!

Took just a few minutes to configure and now when I create a new post on my career blog it automatically posts a tweet on my twitter account with a link back to the post.  Cool stuff if you’re a tweeter sort.

Twitter Tools also gives the option to install a widget on your WP page. From there you can post a tweet to twitter if you (the WP admin) are logged in. Also, you can configure it to show the most recent tweets to post to your Twitter account.  More cool stuff….again…if you’re a tweeter sort.

AlexKing.org has some other really cool WP plugins to look at, so stop on by and shop around. Fair warning…his WP site loads pretty sloooooow.  But it will load.

about logo Which web sites are you deeply engaged with?twitter logo s Which web sites are you deeply engaged with?linkedin Which web sites are you deeply engaged with?netvibes white Which web sites are you deeply engaged with?

Yahoo and ComScore completed a research project to determine how many web sites people use on a regular basis. They found that on average people visited 85 sites per month. Out of those sites, people are “deeply engaged” with only 1.5 of them.  What sites do you find yourself “deeply engaged” with?

I got to thinking about the sites in my FireFox tool bar. Also, I recently started to focus more on social networking i.e. LinkedIn, Twitter, Delicious, and my new career blog site.  Here are the sites I find myself using pretty frequently.

  1. Google- Used Daily. What else can I say? It is the best search site out there. I use it Gmail for my centralized email account, search for my fav restaurant, and use it on my PPC-6800 phone.
  2. Netvibes- Used Daily. This favorite web page is my main RSS reader. I have my daily weather, news, Gmail, Twitter etc. Other tabs for technology, travel, and business. Great RSS reader with some good widgets.
  3. LinkedIn- Used Weekly. Great social networking site that that is centered around business and career related contacts. Excellent research tool too.
  4. Delicious- Although new to me, I’m already envisioning the value of this bookmarking site.  Once it is built, Delicious will become an invaluable resource site for information.
  5. Twitter- Pretty new to me.  I don’t yet see it as a potential social networking site. For me, I have very few friends that would bother using it each day. But I’m posting and watching some interesting people as I go along. Not sure if it will even make it to .01 ;-)

Honestly now. Which sites are you deeply engaged with? Is it 1.5 or 10?
