This post provides info on FTP backups for Windows Home Server using Handy Backup as a service. Below is an article I originally developed and posted back in 2007 on the MS Windows Home Server blog. Many people find this a great alternative to a paid backup service specifically designed for complete WHS or large file backups. This would be used in conjunction with WHS Duplication, NAS backup, etc. Redundant backups, including “off site backups like this article covers, are most affective in the event of a total loss of your WHS due to fire, theft or excessive damage.
This “How To” is meant for those with their own paid host server i.e. web host, semi or fully dedicated. Now, you must make sure you are not violating any SOP’s by uploading your personal files to your paid host’s servers. Many have stipulations about using their boxes as a backup source. Now, I would advise using the provided info and technique as an “off site” back up of select, irreplaceable files. Maybe your super important family pictures, select documents, etc. Don’t get greedy here! I would not suggest doing this with terabytes of data or your host will get pretty upset with you.
Anyway, check out my how to as it will give a step-by-step instructions on installing and configuring your WHS and Handy Backup to perform FTP backups of your most cherished files.
